The Maritime Heritage Trail Project is a
co-operation project between the areas of Medway, Kent and Nord Pas de Calais. It aims at promoting increased awareness and understanding of the Transmanche regions rich maritime cultural heritage and to develop and promote the tourism potential of that resource for the benefit of the region, its residents and visitors.
The project is co-funded by the European Union via the Interreg III A Transmanche programme. The UK half of the trail extends from Brighton, along the Kent coast through Hastings, Winchelsea and Rye in Sussex, to Folkestone, Dover and Ramsgate, turning west through Whitstable, Faversham, Chatham and Rochester, before ending at Gravesend. The French part of the trail extends along the entire Nord Pas de Calais coast from Dunkerque in the north to Cayeux Sur Mer in the south.
A key element of the project is the joint development of a maritime heritage trail along the coasts of Kent and Nord Pas de Calais supported by promotional activities. A simultaneous capital programme has been implemented for improving access and interpretation of key maritime heritage sites.
Above all the project draws together the key maritime sites in the Transmanche area in order to market collectively these tourism attractions and reinforce the identity of the Transmanche area.
