| Walmer Castle |
| |
An English Heritage site.
Built in 1540 as part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defences. Centuries of domestic refinements have transformed it from a fortress to an elegant stately home with beautiful gardens.
It became official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1708 and many of the holders of the now ceremonial role (including the Queen Mother) have added to the site. A legacy of charming gardens and additional rooms, all sensitive to the original architecture of the site, have been left by successive Lords Warden.
Also on site are; tea rooms serving morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea. Free taped tours in English, French, German, Dutch. |
