Fortified TownSituated 2 kilometres from the mouth of the river Aa, Gravelines played an early important strategic role. This small fishing town has been walled since 1160 following the orders from the Comte of Flanders in order to protect the town from the Vikings.
Gravelines has been ransacked many times by the English and the French during the 13th and 15th centuries, however it became an important harbour. Following being alternatively French and Spanish, Gravelines became French in 1659. Vauban was named Gouverneur of the town in 1709. Today Gravelines is a magnificent walled town. |
