History

France's first fishing port has been awarded the title of ‘Ville d'Art et d'Histoire’, which is largely due to the beauty of the old town with its superb Cathedral and Château and its Maritime Heritage.

France's first fishing port
It was near Boulogne that Napoleon ultimately decided that England must be invaded and subjugated if the French were to have any hope of monopolizing the European mainland. Conquest of England would also result in neutralization of the Royal Navy, which was limiting his operations along every coastline. A large invasion fleet of several thousand Channel watercraft was assembled in preparation for the attack on England. The port was expanded to permit anchorage and support of the large numbers of ships and corps of the French army.
