Herne Bay, the promenade, seafront gardens and sculpture trail are perfect for strolling, whilst Neptune’s Arm jetty offers both views of the town and of the famous sunsets over the bay. Herne BayIn 1830, a group of businessmen put forward a proposal for a new town to be built at Herne Bay. They planned to call it ‘St Augustine’, but it remained Herne Bay. In 1831 a pier was built, which meant that visitors could arrive by steamboat. By the turn of the century the town had established its reputation as a charming popular resort noted for peace and quiet. Other developments, including the Pier Pavillion and the Central Bandstand, continued to attract holidaymakers and daytrippers in large numbers from London and the south-east.
Herne Bay has maintained a reputation not only for sunshine, but also for fresh clear air, which is said to come from the Artic Circle with nothing in its way until it reaches Herne Bay. This air has even been compared to Champagne! Herne Bay holds several Seaside Awards. This means that the beach here meets with a set of European standards. |
