.The ancient town of Lydd is a limb of the neighbouring Cinque Port of New Romney. The parish of Lydd comprises the town of Lydd, Dungeness, Lydd-on-Sea and parts of Greatstone. Since the late nineteenth century Lydd has been a garrison town, although now used for manoeuvres rather than having Army companies permanently based there.
The town was the centre of smuggling in the 18th and early 19th centuries, taking golden guineas to France and bringing in tea and brandy.
The Parish Church, dedicated to All Saints, is generally referred to as ‘The Cathedral of the Marsh’ and part of it dates back to Romano-British times. It is the longest church in Kent, measuring 199 feet from East to West, and its fine perpendicular tower, 132 feet high, is a landmark for many miles around. |
