Ramsgate, offers the Royal Harbour, yachting marina, harbour cruises and a Maritime Museum dedicated to local history. RamsgateThe Clock House, currently occupied by the Maritime Museum, dates back to the early 19th Century and for nearly 200 years has maintained strong maritime connections.
Former occupants have included the Royal Navy, Trinity House and the General Steam Navigation Company. A Solar Meridian Line for calculating Ramsgate Mean Time (used for the correction of ships ‘ chronometers) was incorporated within the central tower (1819).
The 233 ton steam tug ‘Cervia’, one of the last steam tugs to be built in Britain and one of the very few preserved. ‘Cervia’ is moored in the outer portion of John Smeaton’s 1791 Dry Dock. |

The Dock was in use for 80 years before falling into disrepair and was eventually converted into a store for Norwegian ice used by the large fishing fleet. In 1981 the Dock was uncovered and a partial restoration carried out. |
