HistoryThe City of Rochester has been a settlement since ancient times, even before the Romans came here soon after 43 AD. Their encampment developed into a walled town called Durobrivae, which means ‘the stronghold by the bridge’.
Today the area is rich in heritage and history. Rochester was immortalised in the works of the Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens and, with its fine Norman Castle and England’s second oldest Cathedral, is an exciting and rewarding city to explore. Guidebooks are available at the Visitor Information Centre. |
